Kenya

Right to School for All

Kajiado County

In Kajiado County, Rift Valley, Kenya, 1 in 3 children do not go to school. This area is mainly home to nomadic people who belong to the Maasai tribe, almost 150,000 of whom are children.

35% of the population here is illiterate: this rate is among the highest in the country,. The problem is simple: there are not enough schools, and those that currently exist are too far away or unsafe. At the primary school in Kajiado County, children are taught in shacks or under trees.

At ActionAid we have been working in Kenya since 1972 and we believe that education is not only a right, but also a fundamental means of getting out of poverty. This is why we want to make the primary school of Kajiado County a safe place and build 2 classrooms furnished with 60 desks and 2 equipped bathrooms.

It only takes 2,500 CHF to provide desks and chairs for the students; with 13,600 CHF we can build a whole classroom.
